FAQ’s for Naks: 582

Question

I have a 582 deck with following fault; During replay I have no sound; even the meters show nothing.

During recording in "tape monitor" mode I can hear the recording on the cassette and the meters are showing the signal.
As soon as I stop the recording and rewind there is nothing but silence. What is the cause?

Answer:

I am familiar with this problem. The cause can be the light behind the “Stop” button, a very tiny bulb and a bit nasty to replace.

From the Nak Talk list I saw the following reply by John Berger who very aptly describes this phenomenon.  As John put in a little comic remark as an extra I take the liberty to quote him here:

“Check to see if the little indicator light behind the ‘Stop’ button is burned out. If so, this will mute the sound in just the way that you described.
You can replace the bulb and this will likely fix the problem.  I believe someone here has also replaced it with an LED and a resistor (to give the same value as the bulb, to fool the circuits, so they work again)

Replace this tiny bulb so you can listen to music instead of wondering how much sake the Nak engineer had for lunch before he designed a circuit that kills the sound when a light bulb burns out…..”
