Question:
I have an issue going from RW into FF or play and vice versa
where the reels spin the wrong way initially for a second. Replacing the main
drive / capstan belt does not change this.
Answer:
The problem is caused by a stainless spring that sits between the two
reels, which has 2 braking fingers which engage then reel table bottoms every
time the reel idler changes direction. If you remove the cassette well cover
plate this steel spring can be seen. It has a slotted screw in the middle
sealed with lock paint. Loosen the screw ¼ turn, and position the spring so the
knuckle sits exactly on the highest point of the idler (which is below in a
little window). Tighten the screw and check that the spring raises and lowers
each time you move from FF to RW and is up in stop mode.
